Few places on earth possess as rich and well-preserved a past as Egypt. Egypt's monuments, such as the Sphinx and the pyramids, are icons of antiquity.
But even though its civilization is more than 50 centuries old, Egypt for the modern traveler is more than a museum. Its people are welcoming and dynamic. You may travel to Egypt to see the pyramids, but you will return with as many memories of the people as of the antiquities.
Modern Egypt is considered the cultural center of the Islamic world, serving as crossroads between East and West, old and new.

Tools and artifacts indicate that humans lived in the Nile valley beginning about 60,000 years ago. Archaeological findings point to the emergence of a dominant political and religious culture in the Nile valley by about 3300 BC. Shortly thereafter, Menes—considered the first pharaoh—conquered the delta and the narrow strip of cultivated land along the Nile, uniting Upper and Lower Egypt.
