Am heutigen Tag standen uns ein paar Kilometer bevor auf Strassen und per Fähre. Von Kill Devil Hills aus fuhren wir über die Outer Banks in Richtung Süden. Dabei ging es von Insel zu Insel über Brücken und dann noch zweimal mit einer Fähre. Die erste Überfahrt dauerte rund 40 Minuten und war gratis und die zweite von Ocracoke nach Cedar Island dauerte rund zweieinhalb Stunden. In Ocracoke ist ein schöner Leuchtturm zu besichtigen, welcher heute noch in Betrieb ist. Die Fahrt am Schluss noch zu unserem Hotel war nicht besonders interessant, zumal es auch noch zu einem kurzen Wolkenbruch kam. Um 21.00 Uhr kamen wir in unserem Motel Ramada in Wilmington an. „Gute Nacht“

Today we were up early again – luckily – as we hadn’t really decided which route to take. After enquiring about the ferries and learning that we had to make reservations for one we called the ferry people. We left at about 07:00 and set off south down the Outer Banks until the road finished. This took us over serveral bridges and islands. The road continues via free ferry (40 minutes sail) to Ocracoke. This island is about 15 miles long. This is where we had to reserve the ferry – they run 4 times a day at this time of year and we made it on to the 13 :00 ferry. We saw many birds again including herrons, brown pelicans, cormorants and of course the ever present sea gulls. The crossing to the ‘mainland’ took 2 hours 30 minutes. Ocracoke is a pleasant holiday restort with the oldest still working lighthouse. We landed on Cedar Island and headed via New Bern to our motel Ramada in Wilmington.
