Gut hatten wir die Tickets auf den One World Tower auf gestern gewechselt, denn der heutige Tag war mit dunklen Wolken bedeckt. Von unserem Hotel aus, welches das Howard Johnson Mayflower war, gingen wir zu Fuss los Richtung Central Park. Über die Queensboro Bridge und weiter bis zur 5 Avenue erreicht man den Eingang zum Central Park. Man braucht dafür eine gute Stunde ohne Kaffeepause, was wir natürlich machten. Das Wetter hielt und wir gingen etwas später der 5 Av entlang bis zur 42 St, auf dieser weiter bis zum UNO-Hauptquartier Gebäude. Bei der Registration, was gratis war, holten wir uns Tickets für den Eintritt ins UNO Gebäude. In der Zwischenzeit hat es auch begonnen heftig zu regnen. Im Verlaufe des Nachmittags nahmen wir dann die Metro zum World Trade Center. Hier befindet sich das 9/11 Memorial. Trotz den traurigen und schrecklichen Ereignissen vom 11. September 2001, sollte man sich dieses Memorial anschauen und genug Zeit einrechnen, denn es ist grösser als man denkt. Nebst den menschlichen Schicksalen gibt es auch viele technische Informationen. Hier steht auch der One World Trade Center, im Volksmund genannte Freedom Tower, mit seinen 541m.

Luckily we had changed our tickets for the One World Tower as we woke up to grey cloudy skies. From our hotel, The Howard Johnson Mayflower, we set off on foot to Central Park. Over the Queensboro Bridge onto 5th Avenue where you can enter the park. This was a good hour on foot and the hotel receptionist thought we were mad and kept trying to tell us to take the Metro! After visiting a small corner of the park (it’s huge) and it was still dry we set off down 5th avenue to 42nd street and followed this to its end where the UNO headquarters is situated. The entry is free after showing our passports and registering. While we were visiting the UNO it started to rain heavily. We decided to take the Metro to the World Trade Centre to visit the 9/11 Memorial. Despite the very sad circumstances of the 11th September 2001 this is well worth the visit. You need time as the exhibition is enormous and very moving. Besides the stories about the people who died there is a lot of technical information. The foot prints of the old towers have been preserved and are now a water feature recording all the names of those who died. The One World tower also known as the Freedom Tower is also here and is 541 meters high.
